NUS just beat NTU in another university ranking.
Here we go again.
Last week, Singaporeans went crazy when news spread that the Nanyang Technological University (NTU) overtook the National University of Singapore (NUS) in global ranking, as part of the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings. NTU was ranked 11th, moving up two places from last year, while NUS fell from the 12th to 15th position.
Sure or not...?
According to QS, NUS generates higher overall research output and greater citations impact. However, as QS adjusts research data numbers to offset the advantage that institutions with large volumes of medical research have, NTU, with fewer faculty members, acquired a higher citations-per-faculty score.
Unfortunately, this victory was short-lived. Just 2 days ago, on Thursday morning, results of another university ranking was released.
At this point, we can’t help ask ourselves some questions like: “How many damn rankings do we need?” “Who’s paying these people?” and “What the heck is going with 38 Oxley Road?”
Anyway, in the Times Higher Education World Reputation Rankings (which ranked NUS the top university in Asia back in April), NUS was placed 27th, one place lower than last year, while NTU remained in the 81 to 90 band.
Check the Straits Times article here:
And to that, NTU president Bertil Andersson said, "As a young university, we know this is one area where universities established many decades or centuries ago will have an advantage over us.
"Reputation is actually harder to change than bibliometric results which are an objective measurement of a university's performance... We have made great strides in the various global league tables due to our strong performance in the more objective indicators such as in research citations."
Is it just me, or did that sound a little paggro? And while all this is going on, SMU students are laughing at us, enjoying their highest mean fresh graduate salary.
Those bastards.
I guess SMU got the last laugh.
